By Davis of Dallas H.R. No. 874 77R12879 JKB-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 1-2 of each year as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week in which 1-3 that date occurs as Police Week, and during this time communities 1-4 throughout the nation hold ceremonies to honor law enforcement 1-5 personnel and pay tribute to the memory of their fallen officers; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, To that end, citizens of Duncanville have set aside 1-8 May 12, 2001, to recognize local peace officers with a Police 1-9 Appreciation Day celebration; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Police Chief Citizen Advisory Board 1-11 and the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, the event 1-12 enables area residents to gain an increased awareness of the 1-13 duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices required of their 1-14 local law enforcement personnel, as well as to give them the 1-15 opportunity to express appreciation for this vital public service; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, The officers of the Duncanville Police Department 1-18 recognize their position carries with it the duty to safeguard the 1-19 life and property of area residents, to protect them against 1-20 violence and disorder, the innocent against deception, and the weak 1-21 against oppression; and 1-22 WHEREAS, At this time, it is a privilege to honor the past 1-23 and present officers of the Duncanville Police Department for their 1-24 selfless contributions to the community; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-2 Legislature hereby recognize May 12, 2001, as Police Appreciation 2-3 Day in Duncanville and extend to its participants sincere best 2-4 wishes for a meaningful event; and, be it further 2-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-6 prepared for the Duncanville Police Department as an expression of 2-7 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
