R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The nationally acclaimed Mother-Daughter Program
 1-2     established in 1986, in the city of El Paso, in order to curb the
 1-3     high dropout rates among Latinas, has provided over 3,000 mothers
 1-4     and daughters the opportunity to attain their goals of attending an
 1-5     institution of higher education and to earn their college degrees;
 1-6     and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The participants of the Mother-Daughter Program have
 1-8     for 15 years contributed to the community of El Paso by taking part
 1-9     in community projects, which have improved the conditions of their
1-10     communities, while developing essential leadership skills; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The Mother-Daughter Program has provided
1-12     opportunities for the participants to hear the inspirational
1-13     accounts of many Latina leaders from the El Paso community and to
1-14     provide mentor opportunities for the participants; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The Mother-Daughter Program, with continued support
1-16     from campuses and district coordinators and from the participating
1-17     school districts along with their principals and superintendents,
1-18     has developed and planned many successful events, including
1-19     leadership conferences, summer camps, and career days; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The program has provided the participants with many
1-21     workshops regarding health issues, information on how to improve
1-22     the relationships between the mother-daughter teams, and others
1-23     that encourage the girls to enter into nontraditional fields such
1-24     as engineering and mathematics; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, The Mother-Daughter Program is celebrating its 15th
 2-2     anniversary by giving the current and alumnae participants, their
 2-3     families, the current staff, the founding coordinators, and all who
 2-4     have contributed to the program the opportunity to celebrate the
 2-5     many successes of the program with a Quinceanera Gala on May 5,
 2-6     2001; now, therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-8     hereby pay tribute to the thousands of women who have participated
 2-9     in the Mother-Daughter Program and have broken with tradition by
2-10     achieving their goals of attaining a college degree and have in
2-11     result changed the statistics to show an increase in Latinas
2-12     attending college.
