                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The nationally acclaimed Mother-Daughter Program
 1-2     established in 1986, in the city of El Paso, in order to curb the
 1-3     high drop out rates among Latinas, has provided over three thousand
 1-4     mothers and daughters the opportunity to attain their goals of
 1-5     attending an institution of higher education and to earn their
 1-6     college degree; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, The participants of the Mother-Daughter Program have
 1-8     for fifteen years contributed to the community of El Paso by taking
 1-9     part in community projects, which have improved the conditions of
1-10     their communities, while developing essential leadership skills;
1-11     and
1-12           WHEREAS, The Mother-Daughter Program has provided
1-13     opportunities for the participants to hear the inspirational
1-14     accounts of many Latina leaders from the El Paso community and to
1-15     provide mentor opportunities for the participants; and
1-16           WHEREAS, The Mother-Daughter Program, with continued support
1-17     from campuses and district coordinators and from the participating
1-18     school districts along with their principals and superintendents,
1-19     has developed and planned many successful events to include:
1-20     Leadership Conferences, Summer Camps, and Career Days; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The program has provided the participants with many
1-22     workshops regarding health issues, information on how to improve
1-23     the relationships between the Mother-Daughter teams, and others
 2-1     that encourage the girls to enter into non-traditional fields; such
 2-2     as, engineering and mathematics; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, The Mother-Daughter program is celebrating its
 2-4     fifteenth anniversary by giving the current and alumnae
 2-5     participants, their families, the current staff, and the founding
 2-6     coordinators, and all who have contributed to the program the
 2-7     opportunity to celebrate the many successes of the program with a
 2-8     Quinceanera Gala on May 5th, 2001; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the 77th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-10     hereby pay tribute to the thousands of women, who have participated
2-11     in the Mother-Daughter Program and have broken with tradition by
2-12     achieving their goals of attaining a college degree and have in
2-13     result changed the statistics to show an increase in Latinas
2-14     attending college.
