R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Don V. Hackney of Lufkin passed away on December 14,
1-2 2000, at the age of 76, and it is fitting that we honor the life of
1-3 this esteemed Texan; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born in Lufkin on February 16, 1924, Mr. Hackney
1-5 graduated from Lufkin High School in 1940 and shortly thereafter
1-6 entered Texas A&M College as a civil engineering student; his
1-7 studies were interrupted in 1943 when he was called to duty during
1-8 World War II, and he proudly served with the 86th Infantry Division
1-9 of the United States Army in Cologne, Germany; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Hackney returned home in 1945 and married his
1-11 high school sweetheart, Mary Lynne Porter, and two years later
1-12 earned his civil engineering degree from Texas A&M; after a brief
1-13 stay in New Mexico, he returned to Lufkin in 1949 and joined Mason
1-14 Construction Company, after which he worked as an engineer with
1-15 Southland Paper Mill; in 1957 he became a project manager with
1-16 Temple Associates, Inc., in Diboll, where he would go on to serve
1-17 as president and CEO and as group vice president of Temple-Inland
1-18 before retiring in 1986; and
1-19 WHEREAS, The father of two, Mr. Hackney greatly enjoyed his
1-20 role as parent and mentor and inspired his children to strive for
1-21 success; his son, Clint Hackney, served the citizens of this state
1-22 with distinction as a four-term member of the house of
1-23 representatives before opening a government affairs practice in
1-24 Austin, while his daughter, Donna Lynne Sims, is a certified public
2-1 accountant who served as vice president of finance at Trammel Crow
2-2 and is now a successful mother in Rockwall; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Also active in his community, Mr. Hackney was past
2-4 president of the Lufkin Junior Chamber of Commerce, a former
2-5 commissioner of Lufkin Youth Baseball, senior warden and leader of
2-6 The Brotherhood of St. Andrew in St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, a
2-7 board member of the Humane Society, and a member of the Lufkin
2-8 Rotary Club; moreover, he was a former director of Diboll State
2-9 Bank and a founding member of the Former Students' Association of
2-10 Texas A&M and the 12th Man Association; and
2-11 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know Don Hackney will
2-12 not soon forget the dedication and commitment he brought to every
2-13 facet of his life; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-15 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Don Hackney and
2-16 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
2-17 Mary Lynne Hackney; to his daughter, Donna Lynne Sims; to his son,
2-18 Clinton Porter Hackney, and his wife, Laurie Swan; to his six
2-19 grandchildren, John, Jennifer, Laura, Caroline, Elizabeth, and
2-20 Christopher; to his brother-in-law, Andrew Cuthbert Porter; and to
2-21 his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-23 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-24 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-25 Don Hackney.
