R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Arthur A. Seeligson, Jr., of San
1-2 Antonio on April 17, 2001, at the age of 80, has deeply saddened
1-3 the family and many friends of this beloved man; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born on October 29, 1920, in San Antonio, he moved
1-5 to Oklahoma with his family in the 1930s and attended Phillips
1-6 Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and Yale University; and
1-7 WHEREAS, Mr. Seeligson began his successful career as an
1-8 operator and investor in the oil and gas business in Kansas in the
1-9 early 1940s, and his lifelong passion for horse racing led to more
1-10 than 40 years of owning and breeding thoroughbreds; among his
1-11 celebrated stakes winners in both the United States and Europe were
1-12 Unconscious, a Kentucky Derby favorite in 1971, and Avatar, winner
1-13 of the 1975 Belmont Stakes; a co-owner of the Hialeah Racetrack
1-14 near Miami, Mr. Seeligson was a member of the board of the Saratoga
1-15 Museum of Racing and cochaired the statewide campaign for
1-16 pari-mutuel wagering in Texas in 1967; and
1-17 WHEREAS, An individual of myriad interests and hobbies, he
1-18 delighted his family and countless friends with his sense of humor
1-19 and zest for life; he was an epicure who appreciated a fine cigar
1-20 as well as a good hot pepper, and he enjoyed traveling, fishing,
1-21 hunting, and playing backgammon; Mr. Seeligson was active in both
1-22 the Democratic and Republican parties during his lifetime and
1-23 served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1952
1-24 and in 1976; and
2-1 WHEREAS, A respected citizen of San Antonio, he participated
2-2 in many civic and social endeavors there and throughout the
2-3 country, serving on the boards of the National Bank of Commerce,
2-4 St. Mary's Hall, the Cambridge Royalty Company, and The University
2-5 of Texas Marine Science Institute; appointed to the National Board
2-6 of Smithsonian Associates, he was also a Phillips Exeter Academy
2-7 trustee and a member of the San Antonio Country Club, the Argyle,
2-8 the Order of the Alamo, the Order of St. Hubertus, the Bohemian
2-9 Club in San Francisco, and the Reading Room in Saratoga Springs,
2-10 New York; and
2-11 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the friendship of
2-12 Mr. Seeligson will long miss his enthusiastic spirit and generous
2-13 heart, and he will surely be remembered with great affection and
2-14 admiration for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-16 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Arthur A. Seeligson,
2-17 Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to his family: to his wife of 47
2-18 years, Linda Nixon Seeligson; to his children, Ramona Seeligson
2-19 Bass and her husband, Lee Marshall Bass, Juliana Seeligson, and
2-20 Arthur Addison Seeligson III and his wife, Carson Trapnell
2-21 Seeligson; to his grandchildren, Sophie Seeligson Bass, Perry
2-22 Richardson Bass II, Ramona Frates Bass, and Sinclair Baker
2-23 Seeligson; to his brother and sister-in-law, Frates and Martita
2-24 Seeligson; and to the other relatives and many friends of this
2-25 esteemed man; and, be it further
2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-27 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-1 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-2 Arthur A. Seeligson, Jr.
