R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Charles W. Jarvis of San Marcos is a notable 1-2 Texan who is most deserving of special recognition; and 1-3 WHEREAS, Born in Waxahachie, he moved to Brady with his 1-4 family as a young child; he attended Texas A&M University for one 1-5 year before being appointed to the United States Naval Academy, 1-6 from which he graduated in 1944 with a bachelor's degree in 1-7 engineering; an assistant navigator of the U.S.S. Langley in the 1-8 South Pacific during World War II, he completed naval flight 1-9 training and served as a carrier pilot until resigning his regular 1-10 commission to further his education; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Dr. Jarvis attended the University of Houston and 1-12 The University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, graduating in 1-13 1953 with a doctorate in dental surgery; he settled into San Marcos 1-14 life with his wife, Maxine, his daughter, Pamela, and a thriving 1-15 dental practice, and after several years of part-time work as an 1-16 emcee and humorous speaker, he became a professional speaker in 1-17 1961 while maintaining his practice; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Realizing that his true life's work was to be a 1-19 humorist, Dr. Jarvis left dentistry in 1965 and embarked on a 1-20 second prosperous career, during which he delivered nearly 3,000 1-21 talks on subjects such as success, happiness, self-management, and 1-22 motivation, making his points using humor amid peals of laughter 1-23 from his delighted listeners; and 1-24 WHEREAS, His speeches were never given on the weekends since 2-1 he and Maxine hugged on the weekends; that is about all they did, 2-2 but they did it enthusiastically; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Named "America's Number One Humorous Speaker" by The 2-4 Call, published by the Associated Clubs of America, this 2-5 accomplished gentleman has been accorded a number of other 2-6 accolades for his expertise in both his chosen career fields; he 2-7 received the International Platform Association's Mark Twain Award 2-8 for Humor, Toastmasters International's Golden Gavel Award for 2-9 Excellence in Speaking, the International Speakers Hall of Fame 2-10 Award, and the C.P.A.E., the National Speakers Association's 2-11 highest award for speaking excellence; in addition, he received an 2-12 Outstanding Alumnus Award from The University of Texas Dental 2-13 Branch in Houston and the Texas Dental Association's President's 2-14 Award in 1980 for exemplary service to his profession and his 2-15 association; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Now retired, Dr. Jarvis is a highly regarded member 2-17 of his community; he engages in activities with Disciples of Christ 2-18 and is a past president of the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Charles Jarvis has made an enormous difference in 2-20 the lives of countless people across the state and nation, and it 2-21 is most appropriate that he be honored for his outstanding efforts; 2-22 now, therefore, be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-24 Legislature hereby commend Dr. Charles W. Jarvis for his deep 2-25 commitment to his fellowman and extend to him warmest wishes for 2-26 continued success and happiness; and, be it further 2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for Dr. Jarvis as an expression of high regard by the 3-2 Texas House of Representatives.
