No. 948 77R13726 MW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On August 3, 2001, Sharon Justice is retiring from 1-2 her position as associate vice president and dean of students at 1-3 The University of Texas at Austin; and 1-4 WHEREAS, After earning her bachelor's and master's degrees, 1-5 as well as her doctorate, at Southern Illinois University, 1-6 Mrs. Justice began her career in education as an instructor in the 1-7 speech department at Northern Illinois University at DeKalb; in 1-8 1976 she joined The University of Texas at Austin as assistant dean 1-9 of students and coordinator of orientation, later was promoted to 1-10 the position of associate dean, and in 1985 became associate vice 1-11 president for student affairs and dean of students; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A respected and admired administrator and educator, 1-13 Mrs. Justice taught an orientation advisor communication and 1-14 education course for six semesters; she also launched several 1-15 programs promoting underrepresented students, was instrumental in 1-16 working with the Fraternal Commission to conceive the Greek Life 1-17 and Education area of the dean's office, expanded campus volunteer 1-18 services, and initiated the creation of the Dean's Dozen to 1-19 recognize student contributions to the campus; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mrs. Justice was an active member of campus 1-21 committees on commencement, university colleges/schools student 1-22 deans, orientation policies and procedures, and university housing 1-23 and food service; she also participated in the selection of student 1-24 representatives for president of UT, outstanding students for the 2-1 Dads' Day Association, individuals for the Cactus Goodfellow 2-2 awards, and inductees into Who's Who in American Colleges and 2-3 Universities; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards for leadership, 2-5 mentoring, and her work as an educator, Mrs. Justice recently was 2-6 accorded a great honor when she was given the John Jones Award for 2-7 Outstanding Performance as a Dean by the National Association of 2-8 Student Personnel Administrators Region III; and 2-9 WHEREAS, This esteemed lady intends to remain involved in the 2-10 field of education as she continues teaching her graduate class in 2-11 education administration during the fall 2001 semester and plans to 2-12 work as a consultant with other universities in matters concerning 2-13 student affairs; she also looks forward to spending time with her 2-14 family, traveling with her husband, and performing volunteer work; 2-15 and 2-16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Justice's expertise and unwavering commitment 2-17 to student welfare have made her an invaluable member of The 2-18 University of Texas administration, and she takes with her the 2-19 immeasurable gratitude of faculty, staff, and students; now, 2-20 therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-22 Legislature hereby honor Sharon Justice for her exceptional career 2-23 at The University of Texas at Austin and extend to her sincere best 2-24 wishes for success and happiness in all her future endeavors; and, 2-25 be it further 2-26 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-27 prepared for Mrs. Justice as an expression of high regard by the 3-1 Texas House of Representatives.
