R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The year 2001 is starting off as a banner year for
 1-2     our distinguished colleague, the Honorable Helen Giddings, as in
 1-3     its May 2001 issue, Ebony magazine named Ms. Giddings to its list
 1-4     of the "100+ Most Influential Black Americans"; she has been
 1-5     featured in Jet, Black Enterprise, Eclipse magazines, she is being
 1-6     honored by the National Women of Achievement for excelling in her
 1-7     profession and her contributions to her community, and she will be
 1-8     receiving the Trailblazers award from the South Dallas Club of the
 1-9     National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women; and
1-10           WHEREAS, A member of the Texas House of Representatives since
1-11     1993, Ms. Giddings has ably served the constituents of District 109
1-12     and indeed all Texans throughout her outstanding tenure in the
1-13     house; currently in her fifth term as a state representative, she
1-14     presently shares her considerable insight and expertise as a valued
1-15     member of the house appropriations, business and industry, and
1-16     administration committees; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Ms. Giddings is a lifelong resident of Dallas County
1-18     and was an executive with a major retailer for a decade before
1-19     taking on the position of executive director of Leadership
1-20     Development at the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, where she
1-21     was responsible for such programs as Leadership Dallas, Opportunity
1-22     Dallas, Direction Dallas, and Dallas State of the Arts; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Ms. Giddings was then employed as executive director
1-24     of the Dallas Alliance for three years, after which in 1989 she
 2-1     founded Multiplex, Inc., a food and beverage concessions company
 2-2     for which she serves as president; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Her professional and civic affiliations include
 2-4     serving as president of the National Order of Women Legislators, as
 2-5     a board member of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce and Parkland
 2-6     Hospital Foundation, as second vice president of the Texas
 2-7     Legislative Black Caucus, as a member of Dallas Summit, and on the
 2-8     Board of Visitors of the University of North Texas; moreover, she
 2-9     has been active in the past with the African American Museum, the
2-10     Dallas Transit Board, the Texas State Bar Grievance Committee,
2-11     United Way, Red Cross, the Dallas Historical Society, Dallas
2-12     Assembly, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and other organizations
2-13     too numerous to mention; and
2-14           WHEREAS, Through the years, Ms. Giddings has worked to bring
2-15     about positive change in Dallas County and the Lone Star State, and
2-16     her substantial civic contributions have undoubtedly earned her the
2-17     gratitude and respect of her fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it
2-18           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-19     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the Honorable Helen Giddings and
2-20     applaud her for her impressive record of achievements; and, be it
2-21     further
2-22           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-23     prepared for Ms. Giddings as an expression of high regard by the
2-24     Texas House of Representatives.
