R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On June 2, 2001, many proud graduates of Milby High
1-2 School and their family and friends will gather in Houston to
1-3 celebrate the school's 75th anniversary, and this momentous
1-4 occasion is truly deserving of special recognition; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Charles H. Milby High School opened its doors on
1-6 March 28, 1926, to 212 students and 13 teachers who marched from
1-7 the old Harrisburg High School to their brand new school at 1601
1-8 Broadway; today, three-quarters of a century later, Milby High
1-9 School continues to provide for the educational needs of Houston
1-10 students, many of whom carry on a family tradition as Milby
1-11 Buffaloes; and
1-12 WHEREAS, In January 2001, the Milby 75th Anniversary
1-13 Celebration Association was founded to plan a special celebration
1-14 in honor of the school's anniversary; officers elected at the
1-15 initial meeting include coordinator Boyce Honea, Milby's longtime
1-16 basketball coach and a 1959 Milby graduate, treasurer Norma Evans
1-17 Conerly, and secretary Sandra Wilks Honea, who lead a dedicated
1-18 team of committee members and chairpersons; and
1-19 WHEREAS, The school's blue and gold colors will adorn the
1-20 Hilton Hobby Airport Hotel during this memorable event as alumni of
1-21 different graduating classes are afforded many opportunities,
1-22 including a golf tournament, to enjoy fellowship and celebrate
1-23 Milby's notable anniversary; inspiring the younger generations are
1-24 numerous esteemed members of the Milby family who have been
2-1 successful in a variety of professions, and a number of those noted
2-2 for their accomplishments will be inducted into the Milby High Hall
2-3 of Honor during the festivities; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Through the years, the graduates of Milby High
2-5 School have distinguished themselves as outstanding citizens and
2-6 valuable members of their communities; in returning to pay tribute
2-7 to their alma mater on its 75th anniversary, they acknowledge its
2-8 deep and abiding influence in shaping their lives, and it is indeed
2-9 fitting to recognize both the breadth of their accomplishments and
2-10 their loyalty to their school; now, therefore, be it
2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-12 Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of Milby High
2-13 School and extend to all participants best wishes for an enjoyable
2-14 event; and, be it further
2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16 prepared for display at the school as an expression of high regard
2-17 by the Texas House of Representatives.
