                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, A 70th birthday is truly cause for a celebration,
 1-2     and  on May 19, 2001, Rodney Curtis Smith of Grapevine is marking
 1-3     this significant milestone in the company of family and friends;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born on May 23, 1931, in Greenville, Texas, he
 1-6     attended Austin College and later served his country with valor as
 1-7     a member of the United States Army during the Korean War; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was employed with the Sherman Democrat and
 1-9     the Dallas News, and he owned and operated X-press Printing and R&P
1-10     Printing, both located in the Grapevine community; and
1-11           WHEREAS, A generous volunteer of his time and energy, he
1-12     assists a number of civic organizations, area festivals, and
1-13     events, including the American Cancer Society, the Taste of
1-14     Grapevine, and the Rocky Top Trail Ride fund-raiser, and he enjoys
1-15     working with political campaigns; and
1-16           WHEREAS, A 32nd-degree Mason, Mr. Smith is active in numerous
1-17     related organizations, including the Royal Order of Scotland, the
1-18     Irving Shrine Club, which he serves as president, and the Road
1-19     Runners Unit of the Hella Temple in Garland, of which he is
1-20     captain; his civic involvement extends to the Irving Lions Club,
1-21     the Grapevine Rotary Club, and the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce;
1-22     and
1-23           WHEREAS, This notable Texan is a man who has demonstrated a
1-24     selfless commitment to his fellowman throughout his life; he
 2-1     received a heroism award from the Dallas Fire Department in 1963
 2-2     for his assistance related to an explosion at an area chemical
 2-3     plant; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Smith enjoys the support
 2-5     of his wife of 42 years, Peggy, his daughters, Joyce Hobbs, Rhonda
 2-6     Strauch, and Linda Strickland, and his 12 beloved grandchildren;
 2-7     and
 2-8           WHEREAS, The birthday of Mr. Smith provides a fitting
 2-9     opportunity for his friends and relatives to recognize the
2-10     significant happiness he has brought to them and the positive
2-11     impact he has had on the countless individuals whose lives he has
2-12     touched; now, therefore, be it
2-13           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-14     Legislature hereby congratulate Rodney Curtis Smith on the occasion
2-15     of his 70th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
2-16     future; and, be it further
2-17           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-18     prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-19     House of Representatives.
