R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Cundiff Cemetery has served as a burial ground since
 1-2     1886, and in recognition of its significance to the Lone Star
 1-3     State, it is receiving a Historic Texas Cemetery Marker on May 13,
 1-4     2001; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Cundiff Cemetery is located just east of the
 1-6     original town site of Cundiff on land provided by Walker Moore;
 1-7     although not formally deeded until 1892, its earliest grave dates
 1-8     back to 1886 and is that of four-year-old Otto Guynn; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, The town of Cundiff, also established in 1892, began
1-10     to grow and thrive as the turn of the century neared, with stores,
1-11     residences, a school, and churches being built; the town endured
1-12     and prospered through the years, and all the while Cundiff Cemetery
1-13     has served as a final resting place for the generations that have
1-14     called Cundiff home; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The first known veteran interred in Cundiff was
1-16     Augustus Oliver, a private in the Confederate States Army who died
1-17     in 1887; in the ensuing years, veterans of World War I and World
1-18     War II, including members of the "Lost Battalion," as well as the
1-19     Korean War and the Vietnam War have been buried there; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Since 1947, the cemetery has been maintained by the
1-21     Cundiff Cemetery Association; each year on Mother's Day this
1-22     organization holds its Decoration Day, an event that  includes
1-23     activities such as songs and prayers, the election of officers for
1-24     the coming year, and the discussion of business necessary for the
 2-1     cemetery's operation; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, This year's Decoration Day will also include the
 2-3     dedication of the Historic Texas Cemetery Marker, and it is indeed
 2-4     a privilege to honor Cundiff Cemetery and all the members of the
 2-5     Cundiff Cemetery Association on this special occasion; now,
 2-6     therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-8     Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the Historic Texas
 2-9     Cemetery Marker at Cundiff Cemetery and extend to the Cundiff
2-10     Cemetery Association best wishes for a memorable Decoration Day.
