R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Emma B. Hughes, a truly notable Dallas resident who 1-2 lived to see the turn of a second century, died on May 2, 2001, at 1-3 the age of 109; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The wife of Bass Hughes, she was born and raised on 1-5 a farm in Navasota County and attended school until about sixth 1-6 grade, a common practice in the days when children often 1-7 contributed to the family coffers by beginning work at a young age; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hughes moved to Dallas in 1930 and was employed 1-10 with a Park Cities family for 46 years; this remarkable individual 1-11 worked until she was in her 90s, and she continued gardening and 1-12 keeping house for herself until she was nearly 100 years old; and 1-13 WHEREAS, During her lifetime, this lovely lady enjoyed the 1-14 affection and support of an extended family and a host of friends 1-15 in the Dallas community, and she shared her faith with her fellow 1-16 congregants of Good Street Baptist Church for 70 years; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to share the love and 1-18 friendship of Emma B. Hughes will remember her with great affection 1-19 and admiration for many years to come; now, therefore, be it 1-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 1-21 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Emma B. Hughes and 1-22 extend sincere sympathy to her niece, Betty Brooks, and to her 1-23 other loved ones; and, be it further 1-24 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-1 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of 2-2 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Emma B. 2-3 Hughes.
