No. 1058 77R16204 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The untimely death of Jack David Rhoads, longtime 1-2 Katy ISD athletic director, on April 13, 2000, at the age of 60, 1-3 has been keenly felt by the Katy community and, indeed, all who 1-4 were privileged to know him over the course of his lifetime; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born on October 13, 1939, in Conroe, Texas, 1-6 Mr. Rhoads moved with his family to Katy at the age of three and 1-7 graduated from Katy High School in 1958; from 1958 to 1962, he 1-8 attended Southern Methodist University, where he was a tri-captain 1-9 for the football team and a valued member of the Letterman's Club; 1-10 afterward, he worked as a graduate assistant coach for SMU's 1-11 freshman football team while he completed his master's degree in 1-12 education; and 1-13 WHEREAS, He then coached at Deer Park High School, Stephen F. 1-14 Austin State University, and Nacogdoches High School before 1-15 becoming head football coach and athletic director at Katy High 1-16 School in 1971; at the time, Katy was the only high school in the 1-17 district and competed in just football, volleyball, and boys' and 1-18 girls' basketball; he oversaw the the school's substantial growth, 1-19 and by 1980 Katy had evolved from Class 3A to Class 5A; and 1-20 WHEREAS, In 1979, Mr. Rhoads became the first athletic 1-21 director of the Katy ISD when a second high school was opened in 1-22 the community; during his exemplary tenure, the district grew to 1-23 encompass four high schools competing in 18 sports, with track and 1-24 field, swimming, golf, wrestling, soccer, tennis, baseball, and 2-1 softball having been added as a result of his leadership; and 2-2 WHEREAS, While serving as athletic director, he also ran the 2-3 Region III soccer tournament for 10 years and was a respected 2-4 member of the Texas High School Coaches Association; by the time he 2-5 retired in 1998, this esteemed Texan's duties had expanded to 2-6 include his role as director of extracurricular activities for the 2-7 district, showcasing his dedication to providing students with many 2-8 ways to succeed and gain confidence throughout his 27 years of 2-9 service; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Jack Rhoads was a compassionate, giving man who led 2-11 his life with integrity and honor, and his legacy of contributions 2-12 to the young people of Katy will not soon be forgotten; now, 2-13 therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-15 Legislature hereby honor the memory of Jack David Rhoads and extend 2-16 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Sharon 2-17 Rhoads; to his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Julie Rhoads; to 2-18 his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Fred Walker; to his 2-19 grandchildren, Jonathan Rhoads and Kennedy Walker; to his mother, 2-20 Aline Rhoads; to his brother and sister-in-law, Orval and Diane 2-21 Rhoads; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it 2-22 further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of 2-25 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack 2-26 Rhoads.
