                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Cuero, Texas, is renowned as the site of a landmark
 1-2     event in Texas history, as it was a starting point of the famed
 1-3     Chisholm Trail and thus the birthplace of countless cattle drives;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, In 1866, Crocket Cardwell of DeWitt County
 1-6     recognized that there was a need for meat in the northern states
 1-7     and an abundance of cattle in Texas, so he called on Thornton
 1-8     Chisholm to lead a cattle drive up north to Kansas; this historic
 1-9     drive began on April 1, 1866, at Cardwell Flats, just north of the
1-10     present-day site of Cuero, and included 1,800 head of Texas
1-11     longhorns; and
1-12           WHEREAS, The drive lasted seven months and 10 days and ended
1-13     in Caldwell, Kansas; over the next two decades, the Chisholm Trail
1-14     would serve as the major route out of Texas for livestock, and the
1-15     income derived from the drives greatly aided the Lone Star State in
1-16     its recovery after the Civil War; and
1-17           WHEREAS, The Chisholm Trail undoubtedly helped Texas to
1-18     become a leader in the cattle industry, and the city of Cuero can
1-19     certainly take pride in the historic role it played in the
1-20     development of this state and nation; now, therefore, be it
1-21           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-22     Legislature hereby recognize Cuero as a starting point of the
1-23     Chisholm Trail and the birthplace for numerous Texas cattle drives.
