No. 1066 77R16400 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Katy Taylor High School academic decathlon team 1-2 followed up their state championship with a silver medal 1-3 performance in national competition, continuing the school's legacy 1-4 of excellence in this demanding competition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, To qualify for the national event, the 2001 team won 1-6 the state title from a field of 40 squads, duplicating the triumphs 1-7 of the 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000 Katy Taylor academic 1-8 decathlon teams; and 1-9 WHEREAS, At the nationals, held the weekend of April 21, 1-10 2001, in Anchorage, Alaska, the team amassed a phenomenal total of 1-11 46,526 points to claim the silver medal; and 1-12 WHEREAS, In addition to the team's exceptional overall 1-13 performance, Daniel Lenhoff was awarded scholarships for having the 1-14 most points in the honors division and the highest individual score 1-15 on his team and also received a gold medal for art, silver for 1-16 music, and bronze for speech and economics; also earning a 1-17 scholarship was Sam Rodkey, who achieved the third highest point 1-18 total in the scholastic division and took a gold medal in music, 1-19 silver in literature, art, and super quiz, and bronze in science 1-20 and music; Lina Dimachkieh earned a gold medal in art and bronze in 1-21 super quiz; garnering a gold medal in music and silver in science 1-22 was Jennifer James; Felipe Arumburu took a gold medal in 1-23 mathematics; Elizabeth Haney received silver medals for music and 1-24 economics, and bronze for literature and science; bronze medals for 2-1 speech and mathematics went to Scott Louis; and Michael Chen and 2-2 Daniel Trahan joined their teammates in winning the gold medal for 2-3 the super quiz relay; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Coaches Susan Shellum and Cynthia Swetnam labored 2-5 tirelessly to prepare the students for the rigors of competition, 2-6 encouraging team members in their studies and helping to fire their 2-7 competitive spirit; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Indicative of the coaching staff's dedication to 2-9 excellence are the team's two national championships in 1997 and 2-10 2000, as well as runner-up honors in 1998 and 1999, and third place 2-11 in national competition in 1995; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The students who represented Katy Taylor High School 2-13 in academic decathlon competition at the state and national levels 2-14 have demonstrated an exemplary command of difficult subjects, and 2-15 it is indeed appropriate that they be honored for their 2-16 achievements at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-18 Legislature hereby congratulate the members and coaches of the Katy 2-19 Taylor High School academic decathlon team on their state 2-20 championship and silver medal in national competition and extend to 2-21 them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-23 prepared for the Katy Taylor High School academic decathlon team as 2-24 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
