                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Lone Star State suffered a profound loss when
 1-2     the Honorable Ann King of Grand Prairie passed away on April 26,
 1-3     2001, at the age of 89; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Dallas County's first female justice of the peace,
 1-5     Judge King was appointed to Precinct 6 Seat in 1966; she was
 1-6     reelected for several consecutive terms and retired in 1982 after
 1-7     16 exceptional years; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Admired by her colleagues and employees, Judge King
 1-9     was a dedicated and pioneering member of this venerable profession
1-10     who served as director of the Dallas County Justice of Peace and
1-11     Constable Association; and
1-12           WHEREAS, She was a charter member of the Grand Prairie
1-13     Woman's Club as well as the Democratic Women's Club of Dallas
1-14     County and the Democratic Women's Club of Grand Prairie; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Judge King was well liked and respected throughout
1-16     her area and was known for her extensive civic service; she
1-17     belonged to the Grand Prairie Chamber of Commerce, serving on its
1-18     board of directors, and was a member of the Grand Prairie
1-19     Historical Society and the Garden Club; for more than 30 years she
1-20     was sweetheart for the Grand Prairie Host Evening Lions Club; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community's youth, she faithfully
1-22     worked as a lifetime member of the PTA and as president of the
1-23     James Bowie Elementary School and Robert E. Lee Junior High School
1-24     boards; a member of the advisory board of the Grand Prairie Family
 2-1     Outreach Program, she supported the Grand Prairie Arts Council and
 2-2     the Grand Prairie Hospital Auxiliary; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, A congregant at the First United Methodist Church,
 2-4     Judge King belonged to the JOY Sunday School Class, was on the
 2-5     board of trustees, served on several committees, and had a life
 2-6     membership with WSCS, a missionary organization of the church;
 2-7     moreover, she donated her time to the YMCA Board of Directors; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan garnered numerous honors
 2-9     throughout her lifetime, including the "Friend in Education" award
2-10     from the Grand Prairie Classroom Teachers Association, the 1973
2-11     "Citizen of the Year" award from the Grand Prairie Chamber of
2-12     Commerce, and a commendation from the Grand Prairie Police
2-13     Department for her years of distinguished service; she received
2-14     accolades from American Legion, the City of Grand Prairie, and the
2-15     Community and Home Improvements Committee, and in 1977 she was
2-16     elected "Boss of the Year" by the American Business Women's
2-17     Association; and
2-18           WHEREAS, Judge King was a loving wife and mother and a
2-19     committed leader on and off the bench, and her exceptional
2-20     character shone brightly in the wonderful life she  lived; now,
2-21     therefore, be it
2-22           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-23     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ann King and extend
2-24     sincere sympathy to the members of her family:  to her grandson,
2-25     Michael Lynn King; to her two sisters, Ruth Sloan and Bea Tyrrell;
2-26     to her daughter-in-law, Carolyn King-Keen; and to her other
2-27     relatives and countless friends; and, be it further
 3-1           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-2     prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
 3-3     Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge Ann
 3-4     King.
