R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Vernor Kennedy of Dallas retired on December 30,
1-2 2000, closing a flourishing career as a barber that spanned more
1-3 than six decades; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Kennedy taught himself to cut hair when he was
1-5 only 12 years old and received his license in 1939 after attending
1-6 Tyler Barber College; two years later, he was drafted into the
1-7 United States Army and transferred to the Air Force, where he
1-8 continued to cut hair in addition to his duties as an immunization
1-9 clerk in the medical unit; and
1-10 WHEREAS, In 1947, after his return from military service, he
1-11 opened the Square Deal Barber Shop on Myrtle Street in Dallas,
1-12 later moving to its present location on Martin Luther King, Jr.,
1-13 Blvd.; this enduring business has been a tremendous asset to the
1-14 community, and Mr. Kennedy has earned a special place in the hearts
1-15 of many of the city's residents through his commitment to fair and
1-16 honest service; and
1-17 WHEREAS, During more than 50 years as a shop owner and 61
1-18 years as a barber, Mr. Kennedy has demonstrated an admirable work
1-19 ethic and a natural business sense, and it is a privilege to honor
1-20 him as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement; now, therefore, be
1-21 it
1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-23 Legislature hereby congratulate Vernor Kennedy on the occasion of
1-24 his retirement from his business, the Square Deal Barber Shop, and
2-1 extend to him sincere best wishes for happiness and good fortune in
2-2 the years to come; and, be it further
2-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-4 prepared for Mr. Kennedy as an expression of high regard by the
2-5 Texas House of Representatives.
