R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, Although only a handful of teams each year perform
 1-2     well enough to win a state championship in their chosen sport,
 1-3     fewer still can marshal the effort necessary to successfully defend
 1-4     their title, and the Vernon High School Lions tennis team is among
 1-5     that elite group; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Facing an Abilene Wylie High School team that had
 1-7     previously defeated them, the Lions players refused to be denied a
 1-8     second state crown, winning the contest in thrilling fashion, 10
 1-9     matches to 9; and
1-10           WHEREAS, The members of the Lions' championship team, each of
1-11     whom made significant contributions during the season, are John
1-12     Leavitt, Wes Lehman, David Streit, Ian Bradford, Jamie Leavitt, Roy
1-13     Lehman, Jay Lytle, Alan Moore, Tim Teague, Kyle Clifton, Josh
1-14     Gorham, Rance Morton, John Osborne, Patrick Parmer, Sonia Basora,
1-15     Jennifer Hardin, Jennifer Brewer, Whitney Fryman, Sarah Marshall,
1-16     Brenna Petross, Whitney Robinson, Lindsey Wilkinson, Natalie Bond,
1-17     Katie Haynes, Sara Jones, Kelli Quintero, Marca Lawrence, and
1-18     Alison Wilkinson; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The school was also well represented in the state
1-20     singles and doubles competition;  Whitney Robinson and Kelli
1-21     Quintero placed second in girls' doubles and Wes Lehman earned a
1-22     bronze medal in boys' singles for the second consecutive year; and
1-23           WHEREAS, Playing an instrumental role in the players' success
1-24     were coaches Ruben Vargas, Carrie Castleberry, and Ellen Byars,
 2-1     with other valuable assistance provided by manager Jennifer Fenter;
 2-2     and
 2-3           WHEREAS, With their stellar season, the athletes of the
 2-4     Vernon High School tennis team have brought honor to their school
 2-5     and added to the team's reputation as a perennial powerhouse in
 2-6     tennis by winning Vernon's third state title in the past four
 2-7     years; now, therefore, be it
 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
 2-9     Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the Vernon High
2-10     School Lions tennis team on winning the 2001 Texas Tennis Coaches
2-11     Association Class 3A state championship, as well as on their
2-12     outstanding showing in state singles and doubles competition; and,
2-13     be it further
2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15     prepared for the Vernon High School tennis team as an expression of
2-16     high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
