R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On January 17, 2001, The University of Texas at
1-2 Austin's women's basketball coach Jody Conradt entered into select
1-3 company when she coached her 1,000th game; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Goldthwaite, Coach Conradt is the first
1-5 woman in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I
1-6 history to record such a notable milestone; the all-time winningest
1-7 head coach in women's collegiate basketball, she guided the
1-8 Longhorns to a 20-13 overall record in the 2000-2001 season and has
1-9 amassed 766 victories in her extraordinary career; and
1-10 WHEREAS, After graduating from Baylor University in 1963,
1-11 Coach Conradt began her coaching career at Sam Houston State
1-12 University for four years and then was a coach for three years at
1-13 The University of Texas at Arlington before coming to UT-Austin in
1-14 1976; and
1-15 WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Coach Conradt has
1-16 enjoyed unprecedented success as UT-Austin's head coach and has
1-17 helped the Longhorns qualify for the NCAA postseason many times;
1-18 astoundingly, the university has won 20 or more games under her
1-19 stewardship for 25 consecutive seasons; and
1-20 WHEREAS, This remarkable woman also led the Longhorns to a
1-21 34-0 record and the 1986 national championship, becoming the first
1-22 team in NCAA Division I women's basketball history to finish the
1-23 season with an undefeated record; Coach Conradt is the all-time
1-24 women's college basketball career victories leader and currently
2-1 ranks second on the active men's and women's basketball career wins
2-2 list, trailing only Mount Saint Mary's men's basketball coach Jim
2-3 Phelan; and
2-4 WHEREAS, In addition to her coaching duties at UT-Austin,
2-5 Coach Conradt served admirably as director of women's athletics for
2-6 nine years; under her astute direction, the number of women's
2-7 sports programs at the university increased and she was recognized
2-8 in 1998 as one of the Top 50 Sports Executives in the nation by
2-9 Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Her impressive record of service has earned Coach
2-11 Conradt numerous awards and distinctions, such as selection as the
2-12 National Coach of the Year four times and induction into the
2-13 International Women's Sports Hall of Fame, the Texas Women's Hall
2-14 of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and into the inaugural
2-15 class of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame; and
2-16 WHEREAS, On October 2, 1998, she was inducted into the
2-17 prestigious Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in
2-18 Springfield, Massachusetts; and
2-19 WHEREAS, Throughout her illustrious tenure at UT-Austin,
2-20 Coach Conradt has been involved in many charities and is an active
2-21 member of Coaches vs. Cancer, an American Cancer Society initiative
2-22 to fund cancer research and provide educational support; and
2-23 WHEREAS, Truly a legendary coach, she has established a
2-24 tradition of excellence on and off the court, and the State of
2-25 Texas has reaped the benefits of her leadership, commitment,
2-26 passion, and integrity; now, therefore, be it
2-27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
3-1 Legislature hereby congratulate Jody Conradt for coaching in her
3-2 1,000th game and commend her for her many achievements; and, be it
3-3 further
3-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-5 prepared for Coach Conradt as an expression of high regard by the
3-6 Texas House of Representatives.
