R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Highland High School senior Jarod Bowen captured
1-2 first place in the 2001 University Interscholastic League (UIL)
1-3 Class 1A pole vault competition at the state track and field meet;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, In the state competition held at the Mike Myers
1-6 Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin,
1-7 Mr. Bowen soared to a personal best vault of 14 feet, 3 inches, to
1-8 thwart a strong challenge from Iraan High School's Hunter Copeland
1-9 and garner the gold medal; and
1-10 WHEREAS, This talented young Texan's sterling accomplishment
1-11 is even more impressive when considering that he suffered three
1-12 broken ribs while practicing during the season and could only
1-13 participate in a handful of meets before the state competition; in
1-14 taking top honors in the pole vault in Class 1A, Mr. Bowen
1-15 demonstrated that he not only had superior athletic skills, but
1-16 also had the heart and determination of a champion; and
1-17 WHEREAS, An all-state running back for the school's football
1-18 team, he used persistence, hard work, training, and extraordinary
1-19 abilities to bring a fitting end to his high school athletic career
1-20 at Highland; Mr. Bowen has proven himself to be a formidable
1-21 competitor, and it is indeed most appropriate to pay tribute to him
1-22 as he embraces the myriad opportunities and challenges of the
1-23 future; now, therefore, be it
1-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-1 Legislature hereby congratulate Jarod Bowen for winning the 2001
2-2 UIL Class 1A state track and field pole vault competition and
2-3 commend him on his achievements at Highland High School; and, be it
2-4 further
2-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-6 prepared for Mr. Bowen as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-7 House of Representatives.
