No. 1159 77R17195 MJS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On August 31, 2001, Bobby Kees Marks is retiring 1-2 from his position as president of Sam Houston State University 1-3 after more than four decades of exemplary service as a member of 1-4 the school faculty and administration, including five years as its 1-5 president, and his retirement provides an excellent opportunity to 1-6 honor him for his myriad contributions to higher education in this 1-7 state; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Dr. Marks joined the faculty of Sam Houston State 1-9 Teachers College in 1960 as an instructor and was promoted through 1-10 the academic ranks to professor of management, was named dean of 1-11 the School of Business and Applied Arts in 1969, where he served 1-12 for 15 years, and then was named vice president for Academic 1-13 Affairs and Student Services, a position he held for 11 years; and 1-14 WHEREAS, After having served as interim president beginning 1-15 on October 16, 1995, this highly regarded man was named Sam Houston 1-16 State University's 11th president on June 4, 1996; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Endeavoring to enhance the quality of education and 1-18 the total college experience at Sam Houston State University, he 1-19 has placed an emphasis on the use of technology for instructional 1-20 programs, student retention, fund-raising, and international 1-21 activities; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Through his strong advocacy for and commitment to 1-23 Sam Houston State University, he has demonstrated the leadership, 1-24 vision, and professionalism that builds success and moves a college 2-1 forward, and he has instilled inspiration and admiration in the 2-2 faculty and staff at Sam Houston State and in the higher education 2-3 community throughout the state; and 2-4 WHEREAS, To his students, Dr. Marks is a man of integrity, 2-5 warmth, and good humor who has served as a mentor and friend, as 2-6 well as a role model, and his influence has helped shape the lives 2-7 of several generations of young men and women; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Dr. Marks has also given generously of his time and 2-9 experience to the citizens of Walker County and the city of 2-10 Huntsville through his extensive involvement in civic activities; 2-11 in all aspects of his life, he has led by example and has set high 2-12 standards to which others may aspire; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby commend Bobby Kees Marks for his distinguished 2-15 tenure with the Texas State University System and Sam Houston State 2-16 University and extend to him sincere best wishes for much happiness 2-17 and success in years to come; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-19 prepared for Dr. Marks as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-20 House of Representatives.
