R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Kayla Bowden and Lucy Flores of Gladewater High
1-2 School recently claimed the 2001 state UIL Class 3A girls doubles
1-3 tennis championship; and
1-4 WHEREAS, At the 2001 State Tennis Tournament held at the
1-5 World of Tennis at Lakeway on May 7-8, 2001, the talented duo from
1-6 Gladewater defeated all three of their opponents in straight sets,
1-7 bringing home the Class 3A state crown with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over
1-8 Vernon High School; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Coached by Butch Clay, Ms. Bowden and Ms. Flores
1-10 finished the 2000-2001 season with an unblemished 43-0 record;
1-11 moreover, they competed together during summer 2000, also compiling
1-12 an undefeated record while winning the Abilene, Houston Clay
1-13 Courts, Tyler Major Zone, Longview, Spring Hill, Kilgore, and
1-14 Gladewater Invitational tournaments; and
1-15 WHEREAS, The daughter of Hugh and Kathy Bowden, Ms. Bowden is
1-16 a senior who has signed to play collegiately next fall at Tyler
1-17 Junior College; Ms. Flores is a sophomore and is the daughter of
1-18 Luis and Leo Flores; both of these talented young women rank in the
1-19 top quarter of their class and are Texas scholars and members of
1-20 the honor roll; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Kayla Bowden and Lucy Flores have proven themselves
1-22 to be gifted and dedicated student-athletes, and it is a pleasure
1-23 to commend them as they take pride in their state championship;
1-24 now, therefore, be it
2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-2 Legislature hereby congratulate Kayla Bowden and Lucy Flores on
2-3 winning the state UIL Class 3A girls doubles tennis championship
2-4 and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
2-5 further
2-6 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-7 prepared for Ms. Bowden and Ms. Flores as an expression of high
2-8 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
