R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet
 1-2     Association (CTIA) and wireless carriers across the country have
 1-3     sponsored Wireless Safety Week each year since 1990 to focus
 1-4     attention on the important role wireless phones play in regard to
 1-5     public safety; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The wireless industry has an ongoing educational
 1-7     campaign, "Safety--Your Most Important Call," and the large number
 1-8     of 9-1-1 calls placed from wireless phones is a testament to their
 1-9     importance in saving lives, stopping crimes, and getting support in
1-10     emergencies; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Moreover, 35 percent of wireless phone users report
1-12     having used their phones in emergencies; this ready availability of
1-13     phones decreases the time it takes for assistance to reach accident
1-14     victims, which according to government reports greatly helps save
1-15     lives; and
1-16           WHEREAS, More than 111 million people in the United States
1-17     are taking advantage of wireless phones, and it is indeed
1-18     appropriate to recognize the safety benefits offered by wireless
1-19     communications; now, therefore, be it
1-20           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-21     Legislature hereby recognize May 21-27, 2001, as Wireless Safety
1-22     Week.
