R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The 2001 chess team from Mary Orr Intermediate 1-2 School in Mansfield captured first place at the Texas State 1-3 Scholastic Chess Championships, and this significant accomplishment 1-4 indeed merits special recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, This Tarrant County chess club, which is the first 1-6 state winner in nine years that is not from the Brownsville 1-7 elementary schools, qualified for the national chess championships 1-8 in Kansas City, where its members will be among 6,000 students 1-9 competing; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Leading Mary Orr to the first-place triumph were 1-11 Mason Harry and Stephanie Ballom, who each won six of their seven 1-12 games and finished in a tie for third place overall; other talented 1-13 team members include Ryan Morone, C. J. Hendricks, Matthew Ruble, 1-14 and Brett Greig; and 1-15 WHEREAS, With their prodigious abilities and hard work, the 1-16 students from the 2001 Mary Orr chess team have proven themselves 1-17 to be formidable competitors and stellar all-around players; these 1-18 admirable young Texans are developing valuable leadership and 1-19 critical-thinking skills for the future, and it is indeed most 1-20 appropriate to pay tribute to them on their most recent accolade at 1-21 this time; now, therefore, be it 1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 1-23 Legislature hereby congratulate the 2001 Mary Orr Intermediate 1-24 School chess team for winning the Texas State Scholastic Chess 2-1 Championships and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued 2-2 success and happiness; and, be it further 2-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-4 prepared for the team members from Mary Orr Intermediate School as 2-5 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
