R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Wayne Finnell of Lubbock on January 1-2 6, 2001, at the age of 81, has brought a profound loss to the 1-3 family and friends of this esteemed native Texan; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on December 16, 1919, in Holliday, Mr. Finnell 1-5 grew up with four brothers and graduated with honors from Holliday 1-6 High School, where he and his siblings were standout basketball 1-7 players; he went on to earn a bachelor of business degree from 1-8 Texas Tech University; and 1-9 WHEREAS, During World War II, he completed Officer Candidate 1-10 School and joined the United States Navy; he served aboard the 1-11 U.S.S. Sepulga in the South Pacific, later attained the rank of 1-12 lieutenant commander, and became a naval aviator; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Mr. Finnell married the former Emily Mathews on 1-14 November 17, 1945, at Riverside Christian Church in Jacksonville, 1-15 Florida; the couple enjoyed a warm and fulfilling relationship and 1-16 were blessed with three children and six cherished grandchildren; 1-17 and 1-18 WHEREAS, In 1940, this exemplary citizen began his career 1-19 with Lubbock National Bank, progressing through several 1-20 increasingly responsible positions until he became president in 1-21 1972 and later, chairman of the board; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Respected for his business acumen as well as for his 1-23 ready smile and upbeat attitude, Mr. Finnell worked diligently for 1-24 the betterment of his community; he played a major role in securing 2-1 funding for the civic center, the Canyon Lakes Project, and Lubbock 2-2 International Airport, and he served as president of the chamber of 2-3 commerce and chair of the First Christian Church board; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Finnell involved himself with many worthy civic 2-5 concerns, including the YMCA, the Boy Scouts of America, the United 2-6 Way, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Red Raider 2-7 Club, and the Better Business Bureau; further, he was a former 2-8 chairman of the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis; and 2-9 WHEREAS, During his lifetime, Wayne Finnell set high personal 2-10 and professional standards to which all may aspire, and he will 2-11 surely be remembered with great affection and admiration for many 2-12 years to come; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Wayne Finnell and 2-15 extend deepest sympathy to his wife, Emily Finnell; to his son, 2-16 Mart Finnell; to his daughters, Marcy McKay and Ann Dreiling; to 2-17 his grandchildren, two nieces, and seven nephews, including the 2-18 Honorable Charles Finnell of Holliday, a former member of the Texas 2-19 House of Representatives; and to the other relatives and many 2-20 friends of this beloved man; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-22 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-23 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-24 Wayne Finnell.
