R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos has 1-2 been chosen as a possible site for the Southwest Regional 1-3 Humanities Center, and this chamber heartily endorses its selection 1-4 as the permanent location for the regional center; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Currently, a special competition is being conducted 1-6 by the National Endowment for the Humanities to create 10 regional 1-7 humanities centers where American traditions, cultures, and 1-8 aspirations can be explored in the context of place; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Among the goals of this project is to expose people 1-10 to the varied experiences of heritage and place, bringing together 1-11 longtime residents and new arrivals to examine a region's past and 1-12 imagine its future; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The United States has always been a country of 1-14 regions defined by landscapes and natural resources; by the stories 1-15 about its founding and its original residents; by its histories 1-16 over the years; by religious beliefs and institutions; by diversity 1-17 of ethnic identity and gender roles; by language, art, music, 1-18 literature, and film; and by its architecture and constructions; 1-19 and 1-20 WHEREAS, For a century, Southwest Texas State University has 1-21 played a significant role in the education and experience of the 1-22 people of Texas, and this respected institution's many unique 1-23 qualities would make it an ideal location for a regional humanities 1-24 center; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-2 Legislature hereby urge the National Endowment for the Humanities 2-3 to select Southwest Texas State University as the site of the 2-4 Southwest Regional Humanities Center.
