                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes pride in
 1-2     recognizing Sara Cecilia Galvan on her recent selection as a 2001
 1-3     Rhodes Scholar; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, The Rhodes Scholarship Trust announced in December
 1-5     of 2000 the names of 32 Americans chosen from 950 applicants to be
 1-6     Rhodes Scholars; the oldest of international study awards available
 1-7     to American students, Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by
 1-8     the will of Cecil Rhodes, a British philanthropist and colonial
 1-9     pioneer; and
1-10           WHEREAS, Rhodes Scholarships provide two or three years of
1-11     study at the University of Oxford in England; candidates are first
1-12     endorsed by their university and are then nominated by Committees
1-13     of Selection in each of the states and interviewed by District
1-14     Selection Committees in eight regions of the United States; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Applicants are chosen on the basis of criteria
1-16     designated by Cecil Rhodes; his criteria included high academic
1-17     achievement, integrity, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for
1-18     others, potential for leadership, and physical vigor; candidates
1-19     are expected to be of high moral character and to have a strong
1-20     sense of public duty; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Sara Galvan is in the School of Architecture and
1-22     Plan II degree program at The University of Texas at Austin and is
1-23     currently working for the Texas Legislature in the office of
1-24     Senator Eddie Lucio; in honor of her achievements and those of her
 2-1     fellow University of Texas recipients of Rhodes Scholarships, the
 2-2     Tower at the university was lit on April 27, 2001; and
 2-3           WHEREAS, Talented and hardworking, she is a model for
 2-4     students of all ages in the State of Texas; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, An exemplary young lady with an engaging
 2-6     personality, Ms. Galvan strives for excellence in all her endeavors
 2-7     and is a source of much pride to her family, her school, and this
 2-8     state; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby commend Sara Cecilia Galvan for her outstanding
2-11     accomplishments and extend congratulations to her on earning the
2-12     coveted and prestigious Rhodes Scholarship; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for Ms. Galvan as an expression of high regard by the
2-15     Texas House of Representatives.
