R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The year 2001 marks the conclusion of a
 1-2     distinguished career for Charles Edward Ashley and provides a
 1-3     fitting opportunity to reflect on his myriad accomplishments; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Ashley is retiring from his position as a United
 1-5     States Customs inspector after 34 years of devoted service, and
 1-6     throughout his fine tenure, he has earned the respect of his
 1-7     professional colleagues for his diligence, professionalism, and
 1-8     strong commitment to duty; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Before becoming a customs inspector, he served in
1-10     the U.S. Army for two years and was a schoolteacher at Booker T.
1-11     Washington High School for three years; in addition, Mr. Ashley was
1-12     the valedictorian of the 1955 graduating class of Phillis Wheatley
1-13     Senior High School in Houston and is a graduate of The University
1-14     of Texas at Austin; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The son of the late Lorane Arthur Ashley, Sr., and
1-16     Cleo Ashley, this esteemed gentleman is also a lifetime member of
1-17     the Church of Christ on Stonewall Street at Waco; at this time, it
1-18     is a privilege to honor Mr. Ashley as he begins his well-deserved
1-19     retirement; now, therefore, be it
1-20           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-21     Legislature hereby commend Charles Edward Ashley on his 34 years of
1-22     outstanding service as a U.S. Customs inspector and extend to him
1-23     sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
1-24           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-1     prepared for Mr. Ashley as an expression of high regard by the
 2-2     Texas House of Representatives.
