No. 1278 77R17420 JKB-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On May 10, 2001, residents of Marathon, Texas, lost 1-2 a beloved neighbor and friend with the passing of Marie Elizabeth 1-3 Stillwell Potter, at the age of 79; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on June 18, 1921, in Marathon, Mrs. Potter 1-5 received her bachelor's degree from Our Lady of the Lake in San 1-6 Antonio and earned her master's degree in physical education from 1-7 Sul Ross College, before embarking on a career as an educator that 1-8 would span more than three decades; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Naturally inclined to teach, this remarkable woman 1-10 inspired countless young Texans to pursue their most distant 1-11 dreams; teaching mainly in the San Antonio area, Mrs. Potter's 1-12 boundless enthusiasm and willingness to take a chance led her to 1-13 take on such tasks as establishing a golf program in the Northeast 1-14 Independent School District, though she did not play the game 1-15 herself, and she won the respect of teachers, students, parents, 1-16 and administrators alike; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In 1985, she returned to Marathon and the Stillwell 1-18 Ranch, which was beginning a transformation into a tourist 1-19 destination; a woman with a sound business sense, she began 1-20 providing canyon tours and organized the Hallie Stillwell Hall of 1-21 Fame, which housed a permanent collection of her mother's 1-22 pioneering memorabilia; she and her husband also ran the Stillwell 1-23 Ranch RV Park and Store; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Dadie" throughout the 2-1 close-knit community, Mrs. Potter will long be remembered for her 2-2 generous smile, energetic spirit, and can-do attitude, and while 2-3 she will be greatly missed, her memory will live on in the hearts 2-4 and minds of the many people whose lives she touched; now, 2-5 therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marie Elizabeth 2-8 Stillwell Potter and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her 2-9 family: to her husband, W. T. Potter; to her son and his wife, 2-10 Travis and Rosie Potter; to her daughters, Kay Pizzini and her 2-11 husband Davis, Linda Perron, and Nannette Patton; and to her other 2-12 relatives and many friends; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for her family and that when the House of Representatives 2-15 adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Marie Elizabeth "Dadie" 2-16 Stillwell Potter.
