R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great
 1-2     pleasure in congratulating Juan Ramon Garcia, a distinguished
 1-3     graduate of Highlands High School in San Antonio, on being chosen
 1-4     to receive a National Merit Scholarship; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Mr. Garcia was the first San Antonio School District
 1-6     student to attain National Merit Scholar status in four years, and
 1-7     his dedication to superior performance is also exemplified by his
 1-8     phenomenal score of 1560 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Assessment
 1-9     Test; and
1-10           WHEREAS, In addition to his National Merit Scholarship, he
1-11     was valedictorian of his class and the top-ranked student on the
1-12     school's academic decathlon team; was a participant in the
1-13     Massachusetts Institute of Technology Minority Introduction to
1-14     Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Science Program; earned advanced
1-15     placement in calculus, U.S. history, English, and chemistry; and
1-16     maintained a 103.55 grade point average; and
1-17           WHEREAS, A native of Monterrey, Mexico, this remarkable young
1-18     man moved with his family to Laredo at the age of two and attended
1-19     schools in Laredo, Northside, and Floresville before transferring
1-20     to Highlands High School his junior year; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Mr. Garcia's academic accomplishments are a source
1-22     of tremendous pride to his mother, Teresa Summers, who is an
1-23     English teacher at Highlands High School, and his stepfather,
1-24     Curtson Summers; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, After his high school graduation, Mr. Garcia became
 2-2     a student at the prestigious California Institute of Technology and
 2-3     hopes to take his unique gifts to an industry leader such as
 2-4     Microsoft or Hewlett-Packard; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Juan Ramon Garcia has set standards of classroom
 2-6     excellence to which all students can aspire, and it is truly
 2-7     appropriate that he receive special legislative recognition at this
 2-8     time; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby congratulate Juan Ramon Garcia on earning a
2-11     National Merit Scholarship and extend to him sincere best wishes
2-12     for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for Mr. Garcia as an expression of high regard by the
2-15     Texas House of Representatives.
