No. 1296 77R17628 MW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Ten current and former students of Longview High 1-2 School have been accorded a great honor with the formal publication 1-3 of their research by NASA; and 1-4 WHEREAS, In 1999, these exceptional students conducted 1-5 research during the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's 1-6 Fly High Program at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and 1-7 produced a work titled "Evaluation of X-38 Crew Return Vehicle 1-8 Input Control Devices in a Microgravity Environment"; and 1-9 WHEREAS, In the first report from a high school fly team ever 1-10 to be published by NASA, the students selected the best controller 1-11 for use by astronauts in the X-38, a test vehicle that will serve 1-12 as an escape pod for astronauts on the International Space Station; 1-13 moreover, they designed an armrest and a bracket to hold a computer 1-14 screen in place for further testing on the X-38; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The talented team included Michel Zoutendam, Suzette 1-16 Shivers, Jason Mays, Dan Robinett, Bryan Lawson, Alicia Moore, Ruth 1-17 Ann Pope, Kirsten Welge, Amanda Grubbs, and Rachel Beene; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The items designed by this hard-working team were 1-19 built by NASA using the students' specifications and are still in 1-20 use on the test plane, and this outstanding achievement foretells a 1-21 bright and promising future for these remarkable young people; now, 1-22 therefore, be it 1-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 1-24 Legislature hereby commend the administration and staff of Longview 2-1 High School and congratulate the 1999 academic team students on the 2-2 publication of their research by NASA and extend to them sincere 2-3 best wishes for continued success; and, be it further 2-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-5 prepared for prominent display at Longview High School and for each 2-6 student as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-7 Representatives.
