No. 1305 77R17676 GMW-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Herbert Arthur Dean of Weslaco; and 1-3 WHEREAS, Born in Damon, this native Texan graduated from 1-4 McAllen High School and attended Edinburg Junior College before 1-5 going on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees in entomology from 1-6 Texas A&M University; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Mr. Dean served in the U.S. Navy for more than four 1-8 years; during World War II, he spent 31 months in the Pacific and 1-9 had tours as a hospital corpsman during the invasion of the Solomon 1-10 Islands and as a minesweeper guarding the Panama Canal and clearing 1-11 the waters in preparation for the invasion of Okinawa; and 1-12 WHEREAS, For many years, this esteemed gentleman worked with 1-13 the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in College Station, a 1-14 branch of The Texas A&M University System, and in 1950 he moved to 1-15 Weslaco to work on citrus insects; renowned for his knowledge of 1-16 and research on citrus pests, Mr. Dean retired in 1981 as an 1-17 associate professor after 36 dedicated years; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Dean has donated his time and talents to a 1-19 number of noteworthy organizations; an emeritus member of the 1-20 Entomological Society of America and a life member of the Disabled 1-21 American Veterans, he also belongs to the Hidalgo/Starr County A&M 1-22 Former Students Club and the Century Club; he has been active with 1-23 Boy Scouts of America, PTA, and the Weslaco Band Boosters, and for 1-24 more than 40 years he served as an elder in the First Christian 2-1 Church; and 2-2 WHEREAS, For many years, Mr. Dean has battled the disease of 2-3 diabetes; he has derived immeasurable strength and support from his 2-4 loving wife of 56 years, Betty, and their close-knit family, which 2-5 includes two sons, three grandchildren, and two 2-6 great-grandchildren; recently, he was presented the Joslin 2-7 Fifty-Year Medal, an award given by the Joslin Diabetes Center to 2-8 recognize those individuals who have lived with insulin-dependent 2-9 diabetes for a half-century or more; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Herbert Arthur Dean has led a rich and rewarding 2-11 life filled with many noteworthy achievements, and it is most 2-12 appropriate that we honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby pay tribute to Herbert Arthur Dean and commend 2-15 him for his many significant accomplishments; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for Mr. Dean as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-18 House of Representatives.
