R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Throughout the demanding and sometimes difficult 1-2 course of the 77th legislative session, the members of this body 1-3 have drawn considerable strength from the patience of friends and 1-4 family, but providing even greater support are our spouses, who 1-5 have shouldered the lion's share of the responsibilities and duties 1-6 that are usually shared by both partners in a marriage; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Our spouses have taken on the additional burden of 1-8 the countless obligations associated with home, family, and 1-9 community, enabling us to successfully address the business of the 1-10 State of Texas through late nights, weekends, and holidays; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Although receiving no financial compensation from 1-12 the state or official title, these dedicated women and men play a 1-13 vital role in the legislative process, for without their herculean 1-14 efforts, the house membership would face the unenviable task of 1-15 allocating their time and energy to the disparate demands of home 1-16 and the legislature; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Unlike many professionals whose jobs entail long 1-18 hours, most of us are unable to return to the comfort of home each 1-19 night, as our residences are spread out over the state, and our 1-20 spouses must endure prolonged separations that create additional 1-21 stress, while still attending to our many obligations back home; 1-22 and 1-23 WHEREAS, In addition to coping with the special 1-24 responsibilities that accompany being the spouse of an elected 2-1 official, they are expected to artfully handle the additional 2-2 publicity and scrutiny with aplomb and good humor; and 2-3 WHEREAS, An ideal example of grace under pressure is the 2-4 speaker's wife, Nelda Laney, whose charm, poise, and gracious 2-5 behavior in performing the duties of the speaker's wife are an 2-6 inspiration to the spouses of all elected officials; and 2-7 WHEREAS, While in the midst of the unrelenting pressures 2-8 under which we work, it is altogether fitting that we acknowledge 2-9 our partners in life for their unique and unheralded contributions 2-10 to the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby honor the spouses of all the members of this 2-13 chamber and extend to them sincere thanks and appreciation for 2-14 their limitless understanding and continued support.
