R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The 64th annual Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo is being 1-2 held on June 6-9, 2001, and this treasured Texas tradition is most 1-3 deserving of special legislative recognition; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo was founded in 1937 by 1-5 prominent local businessman J. N. "Jack" Yates, a Sioux Indian from 1-6 North Dakota who had moved to Gladewater during the oil boom; a 1-7 veteran of World War I, he organized the first rodeo ever to be 1-8 held in France as entertainment for the soldiers, and he sought to 1-9 re-create this event in Gladewater; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Yates owned and operated J. N. "Jack" Yates Pipe 1-11 and Supply Company and used his influence in the community to 1-12 recruit a few citizens to donate either funds or supplies to 1-13 construct the rodeo arena; the structure was originally built from 1-14 lumber and was such a success that it was reconstructed out of 1-15 steel two years later, with much of the supplies and labor 1-16 furnished by area oil companies; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In addition to Mr. Yates, those early citizens who 1-18 were instrumental in bringing this venture to fruition included Bud 1-19 Chambers, Ollie Milliorn of General American Oil Company, Howard 1-20 Hall, Loyce Phillips, H. I. McKaig, Howard Walker of Galvez Oil 1-21 Company, Charles Wampler, Taylor Lee, Mayor A. J. "Archie" Wood, 1-22 and others; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Currently ranked in the top 70 of 800 rodeos in 1-24 America, the Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo has grown into a nationally 2-1 recognized event and over the years has hosted some of the nation's 2-2 most notable competitors, including Don Gay, an eight-time World 2-3 Champion Bull Rider, Roy Cooper, the leading money winner of all 2-4 time for the PRCA, Ty Murray, Lane Frost, Jim Shoulders, and many 2-5 others; and 2-6 WHEREAS, The rodeo earned wide notice in 1971, when Johnny 2-7 Quintana scored an astounding 98 points in its bull-riding 2-8 competition, a feat that held world-record status for three years; 2-9 and 2-10 WHEREAS, Under the skilled leadership of president Jackie D. 2-11 Wood, the members of the Gladewater Rodeo Association have worked 2-12 to foster an outstanding four-day event; the association has 2-13 presented more than 90 college scholarships to the rodeo's winners 2-14 over the years and plans to award ten $2,000 scholarships this 2-15 year; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Several local organizations benefit from the rodeo 2-17 each year as well; the Gladewater Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary 2-18 and Lions clubs, the Gladewater High School Band and band parents, 2-19 and the Boy Scouts of America all take part in some aspect of this 2-20 community event; and 2-21 WHEREAS, The youth of this state have long benefited from the 2-22 opportunity to participate in the Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo and 2-23 demonstrate the rewards reaped from years of practice and hard 2-24 work, and it is a privilege to join them in celebrating this 2-25 time-honored affair; now, therefore, be it 2-26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas 2-27 Legislature hereby extend to all those associated with the 64th 3-1 annual Gladewater Round-Up Rodeo sincere best wishes for an 3-2 enjoyable and memorable event; and, be it further 3-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-4 prepared for the Gladewater Rodeo Association as an expression of 3-5 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
