R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The untimely passing of Monique Nation of Houston on
 1-2     May 25, 2001, at the age of 36, has brought a profound sense of
 1-3     loss to the family and many friends of this highly regarded woman;
 1-4     and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Born in Houston, Ms. Nation graduated from Ross
 1-6     Sterling High School and attended The University of Texas at Austin
 1-7     before completing her degree at the University of Houston; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, This admirable woman began working as a reporter for
 1-9     Fox 26 News in 1993 and covered a wide range of stories; known for
1-10     her thoroughness as a crime reporter, Ms. Nation received a
1-11     first-place award for her commentary on the tragic slaying of James
1-12     Byrd, Jr., from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (TAPB) in
1-13     1998; moreover, she won a second-place award from TAPB in 1997 for
1-14     a spot story; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Actively involved in the community, Ms. Nation was a
1-16     member of the Pentecostal Missionary Baptist Church and served as
1-17     an emcee for the Houston Area Urban League's Equal Opportunity Day
1-18     Concert; she also joined with colleagues from the news station to
1-19     form a celebrity bowling team that helped raise money for the
1-20     United Negro College Fund; and
1-21           WHEREAS, The Young Women's Christian Association selected
1-22     Ms. Nation as one of its 2000 Women of Outstanding Achievement for
1-23     her numerous civic accomplishments and many good works and deeds;
1-24     and
 2-1           WHEREAS, With her hard work and dedication, Ms. Nation was a
 2-2     beloved figure who strived to present stories in an informative and
 2-3     entertaining fashion; through her valuable journalistic efforts,
 2-4     she earned the respect and admiration of peers and countless
 2-5     television viewers in the Houston metropolitan area; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, Although she will be deeply missed, her bright
 2-7     spirit and enduring legacy will continue to live on in all those
 2-8     whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
2-10     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Monique Nation and
2-11     extend sincere sympathy to her family members, friends, and
2-12     colleagues; and, be it further
2-13           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-14     prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
2-15     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-16     Monique Nation.
