R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On June 16, 2001, the First Annual Corsicana Area
1-2 Coalition Juneteenth Parade is taking place, and this special event
1-3 warrants legislative recognition; and
1-4 WHEREAS, June 19th, or "Juneteenth," commemorates
1-5 Emancipation Day in Texas; Representative Al Edwards introduced a
1-6 bill that took effect on January 1, 1980, making this day a legal
1-7 holiday, and each year since then citizens across the state have
1-8 joined together in celebrating the liberation of enslaved African
1-9 Americans; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Contributing to this tradition is the Corsicana Area
1-11 Coalition, which has enlisted the support of other groups to
1-12 promote its First Annual Juneteenth Parade, providing an apt and
1-13 opportune occasion for countless individuals to pay homage to this
1-14 solemn day; and
1-15 WHEREAS, It is indeed appropriate to honor the Corsicana Area
1-16 Coalition for organizing such a worthwhile event in celebration of
1-17 this momentous occasion in the history of the Lone Star State; now,
1-18 therefore, be it
1-19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas
1-20 Legislature hereby commend the Corsicana Area Coalition and
1-21 recognize its First Annual Juneteenth Parade; and, be it further
1-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
1-23 prepared for this outstanding organization as an expression of high
1-24 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
