                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to requiring continuing education for teachers in the
 1-3     detection of child abuse and neglect.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 21.054, Education Code, is amended by
 1-6     adding Subsection (c) to read as follows:
 1-7           (c)  As part of the requirements for certification renewal,
 1-8     the board shall require that teachers complete at least one hour of
 1-9     training in the detection of child abuse and neglect.  The training
1-10     may be provided by videotape or distance learning.
1-11           SECTION 2.  (a)  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
1-12           (b)  Subsection (c), Section 21.054, Education Code, as added
1-13     by this Act, applies to the renewal of an educator certificate
1-14     under Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code, on or after
1-15     September 1, 2001.
