No. 104 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed November 13, 2000; January 11, 2001, 1-3 read first time and referred to Committee on Education; 1-4 March 8, 2001, reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 9, 1-5 Nays 0; March 8, 2001, sent to printer.) 1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-7 AN ACT 1-8 relating to requiring continuing education for teachers in the 1-9 detection of child abuse and neglect. 1-10 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-11 SECTION 1. Section 21.054, Education Code, is amended by 1-12 adding Subsection (c) to read as follows: 1-13 (c) As part of the requirements for certification renewal, 1-14 the board shall require that teachers complete at least one hour of 1-15 training in the detection of child abuse and neglect. The training 1-16 may be provided by videotape or distance learning. 1-17 SECTION 2. (a) This Act takes effect September 1, 2001. 1-18 (b) Subsection (c), Section 21.054, Education Code, as added 1-19 by this Act, applies to the renewal of an educator certificate 1-20 under Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code, on or after 1-21 September 1, 2001. 1-22 * * * * *
