 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to a requirement that information about anatomical gifts
 1-9     be included in the curriculum of certain driver education and
1-10     driving safety courses.
1-11           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-12           SECTION 1.  Section 6, Texas Driver and Traffic Safety
1-13     Education Act (Article 4413(29c), Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes),
1-14     is amended by adding Subsection (d) to read as follows:
1-15           (d)  The commissioner by rule shall require that information
1-16     relating to anatomical gifts be included in the curriculum of each
1-17     driver education and driving safety course.  The curriculum must
1-18     include information about the matters listed in Section 46.001(a),
1-19     Health and Safety Code, as added by Chapter 1516, Acts of the 76th
1-20     Legislature, Regular Session, 1999.  The commissioner shall consult
1-21     with the Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of
1-22     Health in developing rules under this subsection.
1-23           SECTION 2.  Not later than January 1, 2002, the commissioner
1-24     of education shall adopt rules under Subsection (d), Section 6,
1-25     Texas Driver and Traffic Safety Education Act (Article 4413(29c),
1-26     Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes), as added by this Act.
1-27           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-28     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-29     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-30     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-31     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
