                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to eligibility under the Early High School Graduation
 1-3     Scholarship program.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 56.203, Education Code, is amended to
 1-6     read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 56.203.  ELIGIBLE PERSON.  To be eligible for the Early
 1-8     High School Graduation Scholarship program, a person must:
 1-9                 (1)  have the written approval of at least one of the
1-10     person's parents or a person standing in parental relation to the
1-11     person;
1-12                 (2)  have successfully completed the recommended or
1-13     advanced high school program established under Section 28.025
1-14     [requirements for a public high school diploma] in not more than 36
1-15     consecutive months and graduated or be eligible for graduation from
1-16     a Texas public high school;
1-17                 (3)  have attended high school in this state only; and
1-18                 (4)  be a Texas resident as defined by Texas Higher
1-19     Education Coordinating Board rule.
1-20           SECTION 2.  Section 56.203, Education Code, as amended by
1-21     this Act, applies only to a person who enters grade nine no earlier
1-22     than the 2001-2002 school year.  A person who entered grade nine
1-23     prior to the 2001-2002 school year is governed by Section 56.203,
1-24     Education Code, as it existed before amendment by this Act, and the
1-25     former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
 2-1           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
