 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to eligibility under the Early High School Graduation
 1-9     Scholarship program.
1-10           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11           SECTION 1.  Section 56.203, Education Code, is amended to
1-12     read as follows:
1-13           Sec. 56.203.  ELIGIBLE PERSON.  To be eligible for the Early
1-14     High School Graduation Scholarship program, a person must:
1-15                 (1)  have the written approval of at least one of the
1-16     person's parents or a person standing in parental relation to the
1-17     person;
1-18                 (2)  have successfully completed the recommended or
1-19     advanced high school program established under Section 28.025
1-20     [requirements for a public high school diploma] in not more than 36
1-21     consecutive months and graduated or be eligible for graduation from
1-22     a Texas public high school;
1-23                 (3)  have attended high school in this state only; and
1-24                 (4)  be a Texas resident as defined by Texas Higher
1-25     Education Coordinating Board rule.
1-26           SECTION 2.  Section 56.203, Education Code, as amended by
1-27     this Act, applies only to a person who graduates from high school
1-28     or becomes eligible to graduate from high school on or after the
1-29     effective date of this Act.  A person who graduated from high
1-30     school or became eligible to graduate from high school before the
1-31     effective date of this Act is governed by Section 56.203, Education
1-32     Code, as it existed before amendment by this Act, and the former
1-33     law is continued in effect for that purpose.
1-34           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
