1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to the analysis and review of mental illness treatment 1-3 programs for certain juvenile and adult offenders. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. (a) Not later than May 1, 2002, the Texas 1-6 Department of Criminal Justice shall conduct a cost-benefit 1-7 analysis of the potential use of the Texas Medication Algorithm 1-8 Project, as developed by the Texas Department of Mental Health and 1-9 Mental Retardation, to treat persons with mental illness in the 1-10 custody of the department. 1-11 (b) Not later than May 1, 2002, the Texas Youth Commission 1-12 shall review the benefits of the potential use of the Children's 1-13 Medication Algorithm Project, as developed by the Texas Department 1-14 of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, to treat children with 1-15 mental illness in the custody of the commission. 1-16 (c) The Texas Council on Offenders with Mental Impairments, 1-17 in conjunction with the Criminal Justice Policy Council, shall 1-18 oversee the analysis conducted by the Texas Department of Criminal 1-19 Justice as required by Subsection (a) of this section and the 1-20 review conducted by the Texas Youth Commission as required by 1-21 Subsection (b) of this section and, not later than December 1, 1-22 2002, report to the legislature on the results of the analysis and 1-23 the review. 1-24 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives 1-25 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as 2-1 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.
