By Shapleigh S.B. No. 733 77R394 JSA-D A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to the tuition charged certain foreign students attending 1-3 a public junior college in a county bordering Mexico. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Section 54.060, Education Code, is amended by 1-6 adding Subsection (h) to read as follows: 1-7 (h) The governing board of a junior college district that 1-8 operates a public junior college in a county that borders the 1-9 United Mexican States may waive the foreign student tuition 1-10 prescribed by this chapter for a student who is a resident of the 1-11 United Mexican States, who registers for lower division courses at 1-12 that public junior college, and who demonstrates a financial need 1-13 after the financial resources of the foreign student and the 1-14 student's family are considered. A foreign student for whom the 1-15 junior college district waives the foreign student tuition under 1-16 this subsection shall pay tuition at the rate charged Texas 1-17 residents who reside outside the junior college district. The 1-18 Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board shall adopt rules 1-19 governing the determination of financial need of students under 1-20 this subsection. 1-21 SECTION 2. (a) This Act takes effect immediately. 1-22 (b) The change in law made by this Act applies beginning 1-23 with tuition charged for the 2001 fall semester.
