                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the jurisdiction of and procedure in a county court at
 1-3     law in Travis County.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 25.2292, Government Code, is amended by
 1-6     adding Subsections (a) and (d) to read as follows:
 1-7           (a)  In addition to the jurisdiction provided by Section
 1-8     25.0003 and other law, a county court at law in Travis County has
 1-9     concurrent jurisdiction with the district court in civil cases
1-10     regardless of the amount in controversy, except that, unless
1-11     otherwise provided by law, a county court at law does not have
1-12     concurrent jurisdiction with the district court in:
1-13                 (1)  family law cases and proceedings; or
1-14                 (2)  any matter in which exclusive jurisdiction or
1-15     venue is in the district court.
1-16           (d)  In civil cases, the jury is composed of six members
1-17     unless:
1-18                 (1)  a 12-member jury is required under the
1-19     constitution; or
1-20                 (2)  a party to the case files a written request for a
1-21     12-member jury not later than the 30th day before the date of the
1-22     trial.
1-23           SECTION 2.  Section 25.2292(d), Government Code, as added by
1-24     this Act, applies only to a case filed on or after the effective
 2-1     date of this Act.  A case filed before the effective date of this
 2-2     Act is governed by the law in effect at the time the case was
 2-3     filed, and that law is continued in effect for that purpose.
 2-4           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
