1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to changing the name of the South Texas Hospital to the
 1-3     South Texas Health Care System and to eliminating certain obsolete
 1-4     provisions relating to the hospital.
 1-5           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-6           SECTION 1.  Subsection (a), Section 11.004, Health and Safety
 1-7     Code, is amended to read as follows:
 1-8           (a)  The department is composed of the board, the
 1-9     commissioner, an administrative staff, the Texas Center for
1-10     Infectious Disease, the South Texas Health Care System [Hospital],
1-11     and other officers and employees necessary to perform efficiently
1-12     its powers and duties.
1-13           SECTION 2.  Section 13.003, Health and Safety Code, is
1-14     amended to read as follows:
1-15           Sec. 13.003.  SERVICES AT SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
1-16     [HOSPITAL].  (a)  The primary purpose of the South Texas Health
1-17     Care System [Hospital] is to provide inpatient and outpatient
1-18     services, either directly or by contract with one or more public or
1-19     private health care providers or entities, to the residents of the
1-20     Lower Rio Grande Valley.
1-21           (b)  The board may establish at the South Texas Health Care
1-22     System [Hospital]:
1-23                 (1)  cancer screening;
1-24                 (2)  diagnostic services;
1-25                 (3)  educational services;
 2-1                 (4)  obstetrical services;
 2-2                 (5)  gynecological services;
 2-3                 (6)  other inpatient health care services; and
 2-4                 (7)  outpatient health care services, including
 2-5     diagnostic, treatment, disease management, and supportive care
 2-6     services.
 2-7           SECTION 3.  Subdivision (5), Section 13.033, Health and
 2-8     Safety Code, is amended to read as follows:
 2-9                 (5)  "State chest hospital" means the Texas Center for
2-10     Infectious Disease and the South Texas Health Care System
2-11     [Hospital].
2-12           SECTION 4.  (a)  Sections 13.007 and 13.008, Health and
2-13     Safety Code, are repealed.
2-14           (b)  Subchapter C, Chapter 13, Health and Safety Code, is
2-15     repealed.
2-16           SECTION 5.  (a)  A reference in law to the South Texas
2-17     Hospital means the South Texas Health Care System.
2-18           (b)  An appropriation to the Texas Department of Health for
2-19     the use and benefit of the South Texas Hospital is available for
2-20     the use and benefit of the South Texas Health Care System.
2-21           SECTION 6.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2-22     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2-23     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
2-24     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2-25     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
