1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-7 AN ACT
1-8 relating to changing the name of the South Texas Hospital to the
1-9 South Texas Health Care System and to eliminating certain obsolete
1-10 provisions relating to the hospital.
1-11 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-12 SECTION 1. Subsection (a), Section 11.004, Health and Safety
1-13 Code, is amended to read as follows:
1-14 (a) The department is composed of the board, the
1-15 commissioner, an administrative staff, the Texas Center for
1-16 Infectious Disease, the South Texas Health Care System [Hospital],
1-17 and other officers and employees necessary to perform efficiently
1-18 its powers and duties.
1-19 SECTION 2. Section 13.003, Health and Safety Code, is
1-20 amended to read as follows:
1-21 Sec. 13.003. SERVICES AT SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
1-22 [HOSPITAL]. (a) The primary purpose of the South Texas Health
1-23 Care System [Hospital] is to provide inpatient and outpatient
1-24 services, either directly or by contract with one or more public or
1-25 private health care providers or entities, to the residents of the
1-26 Lower Rio Grande Valley.
1-27 (b) The board may establish at the South Texas Health Care
1-28 System [Hospital]:
1-29 (1) cancer screening;
1-30 (2) diagnostic services;
1-31 (3) educational services;
1-32 (4) obstetrical services;
1-33 (5) gynecological services;
1-34 (6) other inpatient health care services; and
1-35 (7) outpatient health care services, including
1-36 diagnostic, treatment, disease management, and supportive care
1-37 services.
1-38 SECTION 3. Subdivision (5), Section 13.033, Health and
1-39 Safety Code, is amended to read as follows:
1-40 (5) "State chest hospital" means the Texas Center for
1-41 Infectious Disease and the South Texas Health Care System
1-42 [Hospital].
1-43 SECTION 4. (a) Sections 13.007 and 13.008, Health and
1-44 Safety Code, are repealed.
1-45 (b) Subchapter C, Chapter 13, Health and Safety Code, is
1-46 repealed.
1-47 SECTION 5. (a) A reference in law to the South Texas
1-48 Hospital means the South Texas Health Care System.
1-49 (b) An appropriation to the Texas Department of Health for
1-50 the use and benefit of the South Texas Hospital is available for
1-51 the use and benefit of the South Texas Health Care System.
1-52 SECTION 6. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-53 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-54 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
1-55 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-56 Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
