1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to eligibility for Vietnam veteran license plates.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1.  Subsections (a) and (c), Section 502.264,
 1-5     Transportation Code, are amended to read as follows:
 1-6           (a)  The department shall issue specially designed license
 1-7     plates for passenger cars and light trucks owned by persons who
 1-8     served in the United States armed forces during:
 1-9                 (1)  the period beginning on February 28, 1961, and
1-10     ending on May 7, 1975, in the case of a veteran who served in the
1-11     Republic of Vietnam during that period; or
1-12                 (2)  the period beginning on August 5, 1964, and ending
1-13     on May 7, 1975, in all other cases [after August 4, 1964, and
1-14     before May 8, 1975].
1-15           (c)  The department shall issue license plates under this
1-16     section to a person who:
1-17                 (1)  applies to the department on a form prescribed by
1-18     the department;
1-19                 (2)  pays the fee prescribed by Section 502.161, and,
1-20     if personalized prestige license plates are issued, the fee
1-21     prescribed by Section 502.251; and
1-22                 (3)  submits proof that the person is eligible under
1-23     Subsection (a) to be issued the license plates [served in the
1-24     United States armed forces after August 4, 1964, and before May 8,
1-25     1975,] and is:
 2-1                       (A)  an honorably discharged veteran of the
 2-2     United States armed forces; or
 2-3                       (B)  a member of the United States armed forces
 2-4     on active duty.
 2-5           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
