 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to eligibility for Vietnam veteran license plates.
 1-9           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-10           SECTION 1.  Subsections (a) and (c), Section 502.264,
1-11     Transportation Code, are amended to read as follows:
1-12           (a)  The department shall issue specially designed license
1-13     plates for passenger cars and light trucks owned by persons who
1-14     served in the United States armed forces during:
1-15                 (1)  the period beginning on February 28, 1961, and
1-16     ending on May 7, 1975, in the case of a veteran who served in the
1-17     Republic of Vietnam during that period; or
1-18                 (2)  the period beginning on August 5, 1964, and ending
1-19     on May 7, 1975, in all other cases [after August 4, 1964, and
1-20     before May 8, 1975].
1-21           (c)  The department shall issue license plates under this
1-22     section to a person who:
1-23                 (1)  applies to the department on a form prescribed by
1-24     the department;
1-25                 (2)  pays the fee prescribed by Section 502.161, and,
1-26     if personalized prestige license plates are issued, the fee
1-27     prescribed by Section 502.251; and
1-28                 (3)  submits proof that the person is eligible under
1-29     Subsection (a) to be issued the license plates [served in the
1-30     United States armed forces after August 4, 1964, and before May 8,
1-31     1975,] and is:
1-32                       (A)  an honorably discharged veteran of the
1-33     United States armed forces; or
1-34                       (B)  a member of the United States armed forces
1-35     on active duty.
1-36           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
