 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to the civil service status of certain firefighters in
 1-9     certain cities.
1-10           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11           SECTION 1.  Subdivision (4), Section 143.003, Local
1-12     Government Code, is amended to read as follows:
1-13                 (4)  "Fire fighter" means a member of a fire department
1-14     who is appointed in substantial compliance with this chapter or who
1-15     is entitled to civil service status under Section 143.005 or
1-16     143.084.  The term includes employees [fire fighters] who perform:
1-17                       (A)  fire suppression;
1-18                       (B)  fire prevention;
1-19                       (C)  fire training;
1-20                       (D)  fire safety education;
1-21                       (E)  fire maintenance;
1-22                       (F)  fire communications;
1-23                       (G)  fire medical emergency technology;
1-24                       (H)  fire photography; [or]
1-25                       (I)  fire administration; or
1-26                       (J)  fire arson investigation.
1-27           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
