 1-8                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-9                                   AN ACT
1-10     relating to the limit on compensation paid by the state to certain
1-11     crime victims.
1-12           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-13           SECTION 1.  Subsection (a), Article 56.42, Code of Criminal
1-14     Procedure, is amended to read as follows:
1-15           (a)  Except as otherwise provided by this article, awards
1-16     payable to a victim and all other claimants sustaining pecuniary
1-17     loss because of injury or death of that victim may not exceed
1-18     $100,000 [$50,000] in the aggregate.
1-19           SECTION 2.  The change in law made by this Act applies only
1-20     to a claim for compensation from the compensation to victims of
1-21     crime fund filed on or after the effective date of this Act.  A
1-22     claim for compensation filed before the effective date of this Act
1-23     is covered by the law in effect when the claim was filed, and the
1-24     former law is continued in effect for that purpose.
1-25           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
